On Monday, the PAC requested that Supreme Court (SC) judge Justice Mazahir Ali Naqvi disclose his assets within 15 days.

The noose around Mr. Naqvi has tightened since the National Assembly ordered PAC Chairman Noor Alam Khan to investigate Mr. Naqvi’s assets. There have been numerous references to the justice system in many different contexts.

Mr. Khan presided over a meeting of the PAC when 13 of the 14 members approved conducting the probe, and PTI’s Mohsin Aziz was absent. The PAC chairman argued that corruption was at the heart of the issue, not Mr. Naqvi, and that he would have gone after Noor Alam’s family members for similar wrongdoing.

The committee requested Mr. Naqvi’s tax returns, wealth statement, housing ministry allotments, land purchases and sales, and records of his travel abroad. Mr. Khan requested that the Auditor General of Pakistan investigate the categorization of plots allocated, and he also asked Nadra to submit information about Mr. Naqvi’s family.

Without the Secretary of Finance, the Secretary of the Interior, the provincial chief secretaries, the NAB chairman, and the Nadra chairman, the PAC chairman threatened to issue warrants for their arrest at the next meeting.

Mr. Khan was also furious that they weren’t there, claiming he had a lot of proof and wanted to test public officials’ honesty.

The revelation of an audio recording purportedly of a conversation between the judge of the Supreme Court and former Punjab chief minister Parvez Elahi brought Mr. Naqvi to public attention. After hearing the leaked recording, the Pakistan Bar Council reported Justice Naqvi for investigation. Referrals were subsequently filed against him with the Sindh Bar Council and the Balochistan Bar Council.
